THOUSANDS OF NEPEAN-CARLETON RESIDENTS HELP KEEP LORD'S PRAYER

“Historic vote in Legislature blends history with diversity”

June 12th, 2008

(Queen’s Park)- Earlier today, Nepean-Carleton MPP, Lisa MacLeod, rose on behalf of her constituents in a historic vote to keep the Lord’s Prayer.

“After a long battle the Opposition was successful in forcing the McGuinty Liberals’ hand to keep the Lord’s Prayer.  The Speaker told us that 11,000 Ontarians wrote to him to protect the Lord’s Prayer and over 25,000 signatures were submitted on petitions.  Literally thousands of Nepean-Carleton residents helped to keep the Lord’s Prayer by using the power of their pen.”

MacLeod participated today in the historic vote to maintain the Lord’s Prayer by supporting a motion that will blend history and diversity.  The motion reads:

“That the Speaker commence each meeting day of the Assembly by reciting the Lord’s Prayer, followed by another prayer, or the presentation of a verse or passage, or call for a moment of silent reflection, or any such other similar activity which, in the opinion of the Speaker, will serve to reflect over time the general demographic composition of this Chamber and of the Province of Ontario.”

The vote was forced by the Progressive Conservative Party and was unanimously supported 58-0.  Premier Dalton McGuinty did not take part in the vote.
