PETITION

To the Legislative Assembly of Ontario

Whereas November 11th of each year commemorates the sacrifices of Canada's veterans, soldiers and war dead in Canada in their defence of our nation and in the name of freedom and democracy by recognizing Remembrance Day; and

Whereas more than one third of Canadian soldiers who gave their lives in Afghanistan called Ontario home; and

Whereas Ontario is one of the few Canadian provinces and territories not to recognize Remembrance Day as a statutory holiday; and

Whereas an estimated 275,000 people have joined social media campaigns to make Remembrance Day a statutory holiday and a 2006 Dominion Institute Study confirmed the same with 87% support;

We, the undersigned, petition the Legislative Assembly of Ontario as follows:
That the Government of Ontario support MPP Lisa MacLeod's Respect for Ontario Veterans, Soldiers and War Dead Act and make Remembrance Day a statutory holiday and require Ontario schools to hold Remembrance Services on the last school day before November 11th.
