BILL TO CREATE PROVINCIAL REGISTRY TO PROTECT ONTARIO HOMEBUYERS

NEWS:

Nepean-Carleton MPP Lisa MacLeod would target marijuana grow ops and establish a provincial registry to ensure the protection of Ontario homebuyers in a bill she tabled today.

Currently Ontario lacks tools to protect homebuyers or realtors from properties that were grow ops or drug labs.

MacLeod's bill would allow realtors and future home owners to discover the past history of the properties. It would also require building inspectors to take corrective steps necessary to make the building safe again and to register the order against the title to the land.

QUOTES:

"Over the years the number of marijuana grow ops has increased dramatically in Ontario. This bill would take serious and necessary steps to clean up our streets and ensure the health and safety of Ontario families."

-- Lisa MacLeod, MPP Nepean-Carleton

"The spread of marijuana grow operations and clandestine drug laboratories is a real problem in many communities across Ontario. The creation of a provincial registry would help protect Ontario homebuyers against the health and safety risks associated with properties formerly used to manufacturer clandestine drugs."

-- Dorothy Mason, President, Ontario Real Estate Association
