Even Morning Coffee and Muffin Won't Escape the Dalton Sales Tax

(Kitchener-Waterloo, ON) - Leader of the Opposition Tim Hudak (MPP Niagara West-Glanbrook) along with the newly appointed Critic for Education, Elizabeth Witmer (MPP Kitchener-Waterloo) and Critic for Revenue and Government accountability, Lisa MacLeod all continued their fight on the ground and online to stop the 'Dalton Sales Tax' or DST outside The Country Boy Family Restaurant in Kitchener.

Dalton McGuinty plans to merge the PST and GST, meaning the PST will be applied to a whole new range of goods and services previously not taxed. This tax grab will mean people will pay an additional 8 per cent tax on all prepared meals under $4 - like Country Boy's famous breakfast, available every day until 4 pm for only $3.99.

"Dalton McGuinty has stuck his hand into the pocket of taxpayers deep enough and this latest tax grab needs to be stopped," Hudak said. "Dalton's Sales Tax will hurt Ontario families when they can least afford it, especially when the DST will mean an additional 8 per cent tax on all prepared meals under $4."

"Thirty-two cents in additional tax on a $3.99 meal may not mean much to Dalton McGuinty, but when every penny counts - and you have several kids - it could mean cutting back or doing without those quick stops for a meal after the hockey games," said Witmer. "A family of four treating themselves to a $3.99 meal once a week will take another $66 in DST from the annual family budget."

The DST will also apply to your Tim Horton's coffee. Seniors who enjoy getting their double-double and a muffin in the morning will pay $50 more a year for those two items alone.

"It's time to tell Dalton McGuinty to stop the 'DST' before he takes one more dollar from your pocket," Hudak said. "Ontario families deserve our support, especially now during tough economic times and that's why the Ontario PC Caucus is committed to fighting and stopping the 'Dalton Sales Tax' before it takes effect July 1, 2010."

Hudak, Witmer and MacLeod called on Ontario families to join them in the fight to stop the DST by signing a petition to show the Liberals that families in the province oppose this massive tax grab.
