Nepean-Carleton MPP Lisa MacLeod was calling on the McGuinty government to eliminate the illegitimate health tax as it applies to seniors and soldiers in a motion debated before the Ontario Legislature earlier today. The motion was defeated by the Liberal Government.

"The Liberal government doesn’t have a problem with taking more tax money from seniors and our soldiers," said Ms. MacLeod. "The insult of this is that seniors have now been twice bitten by the Liberals.  The McGuinty government eliminated the seniors’ property tax rebate when it took office, and then imposed an average tax increase in the amount of $450. This is no way to treat our seniors who have built this province," she added.

The resolution was a promise made during Ms. MacLeod’s spring election campaign. It would have saved seniors and soldiers, approximately $390 million annually.

Ms. MacLeod did find full support with her caucus. "Ontario doesn’t pay for our soldiers’ health care, but Dalton McGuinty makes them pay his health tax," said John Tory, MPP, and Leader of the Official Opposition.

While Ms. MacLeod looks forward to the day when the health tax is eliminated for all Ontario residents, she believes that an interim measure of removing it for those in the military whose healthcare is paid for by the federal government and seniors living on fixed income would have been a motherhood and apple pie solution.
