Nepean-Carleton MPP receives no response from provincial government QUEEN’S PARK, October 4, 2006 – Nepean-Carleton MPP Lisa MacLeod today questioned the Ontario Minister of Health on his government’s failed record for health care in the Nation’s Capital. "This past summer I wrote to the Premier about the looming healthcare crisis in Ottawa," said MacLeod. "According to local hospital administrators we are short 850 long term care beds. That is the size of one community hospital." MacLeod described how three surgeries at the Queensway Carleton Hospital were cancelled one day this week because the beds required for recovery were occupied by patients who should be in a long-term care facility. She said that the hospital’s president tells her that this is a weekly occurrence at Ottawa hospitals. "When is the Minister going to address the fact that 25% of Ottawa’s hospital beds are being occupied by people who should be placed in a long term care facility?" said MacLeod. "When is the Minister going to stop fighting the ghosts of Parliaments past, take a look at himself in the mirror and realize that he, and only he can stop the cancellation of surgeries in the nation’s capital?" said MacLeod. - 30 - For more information: Stephen Gilman, Executive Assistant Phone: 613-823-2116 Cell: 613-297-2051 |
