Says fastest-growing community in Ontario needs a public high school QUEEN’S PARK, December 4, 2006 - The time for a new public secondary school in south Nepean is now. That is what Nepean-Carleton MPP Lisa MacLeod declared today in the Ontario Legislature at Queen’s Park. “Presently, parents of children who attend three South Nepean elementary schools – Berrigan, Farley Mowat and Adrienne Clarkson – must choose between sending their children to high school with another school board or bussing them forty-five minutes outside of their school zone,” said MacLeod. The communities of Longfields and Davidson Heights in South Nepean are the fastest-growing in Ontario, with the highest birth rate in Canada. New homes are being constructed in the community at a break-neck pace. The new public secondary school would educate close to 1,200 students. “That is why community leaders like former trustee Norm MacDonald, and current trustees Alex Getty and Greg Laws are fighting for this school,” said MacLeod. “So too have all three school council co-chairs, under the leadership of Scott Towaij and assisted by Wendy Giles and Sylvia Zanetti-Kamal.” MacLeod is helping to collect signatures on a petition to the Ontario Legislature calling on the province and the school board to build a new secondary school in the area. “By next Thursday I will have delivered some twelve-hundred individual signatures,” said MacLeod. “One signature for each student who would attend this school.” Those interested in downloading a PDF copy of the petition can visit www.lisamacleod.com or www.ourschoolourcommunity.com. - 30 - For more information, contact: Stephen Gilman, Executive Assistant Phone: 613-823-2116 Cell: 613-297-2051 |
