Tory calls for McGuinty to justify grants to groups with strong Liberal connections QUEEN'S PARK, April 19, 2007 – Progressive Conservative Party Leader John Tory today said Dalton McGuinty’s government is stonewalling the opposition’s efforts to find out the justification for millions of dollars in grants by the government. “Organizations with Liberal connections are getting cheques while many others wonder why they haven’t had the opportunity for this funding,” said Tory. “This is an appalling abuse of the taxpayers. Dalton McGuinty should show some leadership and demand his Minister immediately provide the documents to justify this spending.” Over the past two days, two clear examples have been raised in the Legislature where the McGuinty government has provided grants to organizations with Liberal connections. Despite numerous questions, Dalton McGuinty and his Minister of Citizenship and Immigration refuse to release the guidelines for this funding or the application process. “This is the kind of cynical approach that drives people nuts. It stinks and it puts a stench over this whole place,” said Tory. “This makes everyone lose faith in our politicians. The people of Ontario deserve better.” -30- For more information: Brendan Howe (416) 325-0412 |
