Gary Theoret recognized for work to reduce smoking rates among Osgoode youth NEPEAN-CARLETON, May 14, 2007 – Official Opposition Children and Youth Critic Lisa MacLeod, joined by Ontario PC Leader John Tory and past recipient of the Heather Crowe Award Maureen Tourangeau, recognized Osgoode Township High School Teacher Gary Theoret for his work to reduce smoking rates among Osgoode youth. “Gary has spearheaded a major student smoking cessation program in Osgoode,” said MacLeod. “In that time the smoking rate at Osgoode has gone from 24 per cent to about 15 per cent.” The Heather Crowe Award was created to recognize individuals and organizations across Ontario who have made a significant contribution to tobacco control efforts on a local level. In 2002, Ottawa-area waitress and Nepean-Carleton resident Heather Crowe was diagnosed with lung cancer due to exposure to second-hand smoke in the workplace.
