NEPEAN-CARLETON, May 17, 2007 - With gasoline prices hovering well above a dollar a litre, MPP Lisa MacLeod today calls on the McGuinty Liberal Government to stop excluding small town and rural Ontario from their fair share of gas tax revenues. For every litre of gas Ontarians buy, they pay 14.7 cents in Provincial tax. That amounts to $7.35 in provincial gas tax on a 50-litre fill up. The McGuinty Government has given cities a portion of the gas tax for transit, but the Liberals have left rural communities out in the cold. “The price of gas is a big issue for people in rural communities like Osgoode, Metcalfe, and North Gower,” said MacLeod. “But what’s worse is the discrimination against rural Ontario on the sharing of the gas tax.” “The Federal Government shares a portion of their gas tax with all communities, large and small. It’s time that the McGuinty Government afforded the same respect to rural communities,” said MacLeod MacLeod is encouraging residents who agree that rural communities should also benefit from the Provincial gas tax to contact Premier Dalton McGuinty by mail: at Room 281, Main Legislative Building, Queen’s Park, Toronto Ontario M7A 1A4 or by e-mail: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
