Caught keeping secret from parents alleged abuses at provincially-licenced daycares, McGuinty Liberals hold press conference to congratulate themselves for program from three years ago. QUEEN’S PARK, May 29, 2007 – Rather than addressing parents’ concerns and questions from the opposition regarding revelations of alleged abuses at provincially-licenced daycare facilities, the McGuinty Liberals chose instead today to hold a campaign-style press conference to congratulate themselves for a school lunch program from 2004, according to Opposition Children & Youth Critic Lisa MacLeod. "They just don’t learn. Yesterday the McGuinty Liberals’ cavalier attitude towards the safety of Ontario’s children at provincially-licenced daycares was on full display, just as it was when the Auditor General revealed children being put at risk at some Children’s Aid Societies, and just as it was when children of our military personnel serving overseas needed this government’s assistance at the Pheonix Centre in Petawawa," said MacLeod. "And still, this morning they continued their ‘novelty cheque’ tour of Ontario with a press conference where they didn’t even make a new announcement. To use taxpayer money for what is clearly a campaign event when there are serious issues with children’s safety to deal with is the worst kind of apathy." The McGuinty government held a media event this morning in Etobicoke to praise themselves for a school nutrition program that was first launched three years ago in 2004. No new programs or new funding was announced, and no answers were given to questions of alleged abuses at provincially-licenced daycare facilities. - 30 - For more information: Stephen Gilman, Executive Assistant Nepean: 613-823-2116 Queen’s Park: 416-325-6351 Cell: 613-297-2051 Web: www.lisamacleod.com |
