Child and Youth Critic Lisa MacLeod applauds judge for common-sense ruling QUEEN'S PARK, June 12, 2007 - Official Opposition Critic for Children and Youth Services Lisa MacLeod today applauded Justice Maurice Cullity for ruling that families with autistic children caught in a lawsuit against the provincial government will not have to pay thousands of dollars in legal costs sought by the government. "I'm delighted that these families who have suffered so much to this point won't have to suffer the additional indignity of paying court costs to the same government that has failed their children," said MacLeod. "Now the McGuinty Liberals should show the same common sense as Justice Cullity, stop wasting taxpayer money, and drop fighting families of Autistic children once and for all." The provincial government was seeking $85,000 in legal costs from the families under "loser pay" rules that shouldn't apply in cases of public interest. "The Liberal government took the official position in court that the outcome of the case did not have a special, specific significance beyond the families involved in the case," said MacLeod. "It says a lot about McGuinty and his gang that they believe the public has no legitimate concern or interest in the protection for some of Ontario's most vulnerable and disadvantaged children." - 30 - For more information: Stephen Gilman, Executive Assistant Office of Lisa MacLeod, MPP (Nepean-Carleton) Queen's Park: 416-325-6351 Nepean: 613-823-2116 Cell: 613-297-2051 Web: www.lisamacleod.com |
