Release of Quality of Care Report by Ontario Child Advocate not much different than Value For Money Audit by Auditor General

QUEEN’S PARK, June 21, 2007 – The Official Opposition Critic for Children and Youth Services, MPP Lisa MacLeod, today expressed her disappointment with the McGuinty government after attending a press conference hosted by Ontario’s Child Advocate on the quality of care at three Children’s Aid Societies.

“This is the Auditor General’s report all over again,” said MacLeod, referring to the Quality of Care review undertaken by the Child Advocate.  “Whether it was the value for money audit released by the Auditor General in December 2006 or the quality of care review announced by the child advocate today, one thing is clear, the McGuinty Liberals are still asleep at the switch when it comes to Ontario’s most vulnerable children.”

MacLeod pointed to similar findings in the auditor’s and the advocate’s respective reports highlighting shortcomings in the Ministry of Children and Youth Services.

“In both reports we find systemic underperformance by the Minister with respect to unclear reporting practices, the lack of comprehensive policies, standards either being ignored or not in place at all, and jurisdictional issues,” said MacLeod.  “The buck has to stop somewhere, and in this case the Minister is responsible.”
