CONSERVATIVE MPP TABLES RESOLUTION TO MAKE ONTARIO LEGISLATURE MORE FAMILY FRIENDLY

For Immediate Release                                                      December 3, 2007

(Queen’s Park) - Tory MPP Lisa MacLeod has tabled a resolution calling on the Legislative Assembly to become more family friendly.  MacLeod’s resolution calls for the immediate appointment of a joint committee of the legislature and former MPPs with the goal of making the legislature more family friendly.

“There is a demonstrated need at Queen’s Park to address the barriers placed on parents with small children in the legislature as well as the other obstacles placed in the way of family life,” said MacLeod.  “As legislators we should never be forced to choose between being a good MPP or being a good parent.  Our roles are not mutually exclusive.”

MacLeod, who has been an advocate of making Queen’s Park more family friendly since elected in a 2006 by-election, has suggested limiting evening sittings and opening an onsite daycare at the legislature as possible starting points.  “The fact is, most members would benefit from a better, more family friendly environment, whether that is increased childcare options that respond to our sitting calendar, or a spousal program that helps our partners adapt to a move to Toronto from elsewhere in the province. If supported by the legislature, this joint committee could explore all of those options,” concluded MacLeod.
