CONSERVATIVE MPP LISA MACLEOD, VICTORIOUS IN PUSHING FOR FAMILY FRIENDLY REFORM

For Immediate Release

December 11, 2007

(Queen’s Park) – With unanimous consent from all parties, Tory MPP Lisa MacLeod has come one step further in making the Legislative Assembly more family friendly.  Today, Members agreed that the House Leaders of the recognized parties setup an all party panel to make recommendations to the Speaker on ways to make working at the Ontario Legislature more family friendly.

“No one in this place- regardless of gender, or political affiliation- should have to choose between being an effective representative and being a good parent,” said MacLeod.  “That’s why I am so happy that all of the house leaders agreed in appointing a joint -all party- committee, to look at modernizing this legislature, while respecting its traditions.”

MacLeod called for all corners of the House to look at ideas such as; reducing evening sittings, bringing a day care and a prayer room onsite; creating a spousal association in order to make the Legislature more family friendly.

“This place was created over 200 years ago- before women had the right to vote, before men took on greater parenting roles and long before the diversity we now see in Ontario was reflected in this Chamber,” commented MacLeod.  “We are the Stewards of this House and I pleased we can make this house come into the 21st Century.”
