(Toronto, ON) – Progressive Conservative Party Leader John Tory and PC MPP Lisa MacLeod (Nepean-Carleton) today called on Dalton McGuinty to crack down immediately on individuals who abuse Ontario’s welfare and social benefits system. “As Premier of this province, the buck stops with Mr. McGuinty,” said Tory. “It’s unacceptable for anyone to exploit our system to their own personal advantage. In this instance, we have people openly claiming that abuse is taking place. Even the Minister responsible says she is ‘perturbed’. If the McGuinty Liberals are perturbed, what are they doing about it?” “In order to put an end to any possible abuse, they must act now to make sure that our laws are clear and consistent,” added Tory. Tory made the comments regarding revelations last week that men with multiple wives are receiving multiple welfare benefits in Ontario. "Most Ontarians live by the rules and work hard,” said MacLeod, "Abuses to our system should be penalized, particularly when they attack our values.” MacLeod said the government has a responsibility to clarify the Ontario Works Act and the Family Law Act. She called on the McGuinty Liberals to change the law to ensure a clear definition of spouse exists within both Acts and that it complies with federal law. “It's up to Dalton McGuinty to take a strong moral stand for hardworking taxpayers. There are Ontarians who are struggling to get by and it's up to the government to protect them against those who abuse our social welfare system,” said MacLeod.
