NOTICE: MACLEOD OPPOSES MCGUNITY PLAN TO REMOVE LORD'S PRAYER FROM LEGISLATURE PDF Print E-mail

Let me say at the outset how disappointed I am in the McGuinty Government for their unilateral and hasty decision to consider removing this sacred prayer from the Legislature. There is a delicate balance between parliamentary reform and respecting some of the very best traditions in the legislature.  Mr. McGuinty’s actions will only result in polarizing Ontario and will undoubtedly compromise an integral part of parliamentary
tradition first established in 1793 under Lieutenant Governor John Graves Simcoe.

I will not support Dalton McGuinty’s plan to remove the Lord’s Prayer from our daily routine at the legislature.

The Lord’s Prayer embodies principles that most people, regardless of religion, abide by:  charity, hope, faith and goodwill toward mankind.  Reflecting on those values is entirely appropriate as Members of the Legislature begin daily proceedings.  As an advocate of Parliamentary reform, I think the Lord’s Prayer can be maintained while respecting the
spiritual diversity within the legislature by opening a non-denominational prayer room.

Please be assured that I will challenge the McGuinty Government on their plan to remove the Lord’s Prayer, and I would ask that you consider signing the attached petition.

Kindest regards,

Lisa MacLeod, MPP
