1,545 NEPEAN-CARLETON RESIDENTS SAY LEAVE THE LORD'S PRAYER ALONE For Immediate Release April 1st, 2008 (Queen's Park) Conservative MPP Lisa MacLeod brought the fight to save the Lord's Prayer to the Legislature today, and introduced 1,545 signatures who told the Legislature to leave the Lord's Prayer alone. "Ontario's traditions like the Lord's Prayer should be preserved," stated MacLeod. "People from across the world have come to Canada because of the great country we have built based on our traditions. I do not understand why the Liberals are always running from these traditions." The Lord's Prayer has been an integral part of the Parliamentary heritage ever since it was established in 1793 under Lieutenant Governor John Graves Simcoe. The Lord's Prayer is a significant part of the religious heritage of millions of Ontarians of culturally diverse background. "The 1,545 people who have signed the petition have sent a clear message to the McGuinty Liberals," stated MacLeod. "We must continue our long standing practice in using the Lord's Prayer." -30- For more information please contact Jad Haffar, 416-325-6351 LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY OF ONTARIO Tuesday 1 April 2008 LORD'S PRAYER Ms. Lisa MacLeod: One thousand, five hundred and forty-five people from the city of Ottawa have signed a petition calling on the McGuinty Liberals to retain the Lord's Prayer. "Whereas Premier Dalton McGuinty has called on the Ontario Legislature to consider removing the Lord' s Prayer from its daily proceedings; and "Whereas the Lord's Prayer has been an integral part of our parliamentary heritage that was ... established in 1793 under Lieutenant Governor John Graves Simcoe; and "Whereas the Lord's Prayer is today a significant part of the religious heritage of millions of Ontarians of culturally diverse backgrounds; "Therefore we, the undersigned, petition the Parliament of Ontario to continue its long-standing practice of using the Lord's Prayer as part of its daily proceedings." I will affix my signature with the other 1,545 people from the city of Ottawa and present it to page Samuel. -30- |
