“House Relocation Program Costing Taxpayers Millions”

(Queen’s Park) - Ontario Progressive Conservative Government and Consumer Services Critic Lisa MacLeod (Nepean-Carleton) and PC MPP Toby Barrett (Haldimand-Norfolk) are demanding the Liberals audit a public service home relocation program that is costing taxpayers millions.

“Taxpayers are being stung by the Home Relocation program which has cost them over $1 million in over appraised homes alone.  The Liberals need to audit this relocation program before taxpayers get ripped off further,” said MacLeod.

The Home Owner Employee Relocation Program allows civil servants to shop around for appraisals until they receive the price they want. The Ministry of Government Services has no check on the valuing of employees’ homes. In a review of the program, nearly 40 properties sold for $22,700 less than their appraised value.

MPP Toby Barrett joined MPP MacLeod in calling on the Liberals to order an audit of the program and put a process in place to ensure that appraisals are done properly and fairly.

“Regrettably this reinforces the old saw that government money is stupid money,” Barrett said. “It’s incumbent on the Minister to get to the bottom of this.”

MacLeod added: “This is typical McGuinty Liberal policy - there is no consistency. Taxpayers deserve better.”
