On the day that the Ontario Legislature got called back for back-to-work legislation for York University, Nepean-Carleton MPP Lisa MacLeod raised the issue of the 47 day strike by OC Transpo that has paralyzed the City of Ottawa. MacLeod urged the Premier to offer emergency social service funding to the City of Ottawa. “Calls for help by ODSP and Ontario Works recipients and the working poor have increased dramatically at my constituency office,” stated MacLeod. “My constituents are telling me they’ve had to choose between gas, medication and food.” The funding would enable community organizations like the Nepean, Rideau and Osgoode Community Resource Centre to continue their strike taxi chit program. It would help the working poor who have to choose between putting gas in their cars and putting food on their tables. “The time has come for this government to step up to the plate on the humanitarian side of this strike,” stated MacLeod. “I urge the Premier to call Mayor Larry O’Brien and to inject a one time emergency strike assistance to cover the City’s emergency social funding increase.” For Immediate Release January 25th, 2008 -30- |
