May 3, 06 Queen’s Park – In a private members motion tabled in the legislature today, Nepean-Carleton MPP, Lisa MacLeod called on the Government to eliminate the health tax. While Ms. MacLeod looks forward to the day when the health tax is eliminated for all Ontario residents, she believes that as an interim measure, the health tax should be removed from those who protect Canada and those who have built Ontario. “During my recent election campaign, I heard from many seniors and serving military about the financial burden they carry with this tax,” explained MacLeod. “I promised to bring their concerns to Queens’ Park as quickly as possible.” Ms. MacLeod found support with the Leader of the Opposition. In April, John Tory issued a media release stating “Ontario doesn’t pay for our soldiers’ health care but Dalton McGuinty makes them pay his health tax.” Over 30,000 military personnel in Ontario and over half of our seniors are affected by the health tax. The resolution reads as follows: …we call on the Government of Ontario to immediately eliminate the illegitimate health tax, beginning with serving military personnel and senior citizens. MPP MacLeod has prepared a petition to gather signatures of support for her motion. -30- For more information: (613) 297-2051 |
