Nepean-Carleton MPP demands MNR to help City Trap and Relocate Coyotes in Ottawa

For Immediate Release

November 5, 2008

(Queen’s Park)- Today, Nepean-Carleton MPP urged the Minister of Natural Resources (MNR) into action on fixing the coyote problem in Greely and other parts of rural Ottawa.

“My constituents have been demanding the MNR to protect them from the dangers of a growing coyote problem.  As early as January 24th, I asked the MNR to take specific steps to keep my residents safe from coyotes,” said MacLeod.

On January 24th, 2008 MPP MacLeod asked the Ministry to take the following steps to protect residents in her Nepean-Carleton riding from the growing threats of the predators:

a)         Notify the Minister immediately of the coyote threat;

b)         Provide public safety information on protection against coyotes;

c)         Provide assistance for trapping and relocating coyotes in Greely and Barrhaven;

d)         Assist the City of Ottawa in starting its own trapping and relocation program.

“The Minister is responsible for wildlife issues, plain and simple, and she should be cooperating with the City of Ottawa to create an effective and safe trapping and relocation program,” concluded MacLeod.
